The European SUP League Enters Its Decisive Stage with Isla Cristina and Sesimbra on the Horizon
Donato Freens and Alba Alonso Frey lead the standings ahead of an intense final block that will decide the 2026 titles.
The 2026 European SUP League is approaching the decisive stage of its calendar. Following the events held in Santa Pola, Taranto, Zurich and Rybnik, the circuit will return in September for two consecutive stops: the debut of Isla Cristina on the coast of Huelva, Spain, and the Grand Final in Sesimbra, Portugal.
Two weekends, two Atlantic venues and the final points of a season in which both the men’s and women’s Overall Open titles remain undecided. The consistency shown during the opening four events has given the current leaders an advantage, but the September results could still significantly reshape the standings.
Isla Cristina Opens the Final Block of the Season
Competition will resume with the European SUP Race Isla Cristina, taking place from 4 to 6 September at Playa Central. It will be the fifth event of the season and the first European SUP League stop to be held in Isla Cristina and on the Costa de la Luz.
Saturday 5 September will be dedicated to the 200-metre Sprint, while the Technical Race will be held on Sunday 6 September. Both disciplines will award points towards the official ranking, with a combined prize purse of €6,000.
The characteristics of the Huelva coastline could play an important role. Atlantic swell, wind and changing conditions will add an extra level of difficulty to two formats in which starts, buoy turns, ocean reading and quick decision-making are essential.
As well as opening the decisive stage of the championship, Isla Cristina will offer the contenders their final opportunity to reach the Grand Final in control of their own destiny — or to close the gap on the current leaders.
Sesimbra Will Crown the 2026 Champions
Just one week later, from 11 to 13 September, the competition will travel to Sesimbra for the sixth and final event of the calendar.
The Portuguese town will once again host the European SUP League Grand Final after successfully bringing the circuit’s inaugural season to a close. Its organisational experience, maritime tradition and Atlantic competition area make Sesimbra a particularly demanding setting for the title decider.
The short turnaround between the two events will require athletes to carefully manage their effort, travel and recovery. An entire season will be decided in just ten days, meaning that consistency across Isla Cristina and Sesimbra could prove as important as victory in any individual discipline.
Donato Freens Defends a Strong Lead in the Men’s Ranking
Donato Freens will arrive in September as the leader of the men’s Overall Open ranking with 2,501 points. The Dutch athlete has built his advantage through remarkable consistency and his ability to perform across different racing formats. His Technical Race victory and second place in the Sprint in Poland further strengthened his position as the main title favourite.
Sergio Cantoral sits second with 1,940 points, 561 behind the leader. The Spaniard was one of the standout performers in Rybnik, finishing second in the Technical Race before winning the 200-metre Sprint. His speed could make him a direct threat from the opening day in Isla Cristina.
Filippo Mercuriali is close behind in third place. The Italian has 1,869 points, just 71 fewer than Cantoral. His consistent presence near the front keeps the battle for second place completely open and gives him an opportunity to challenge for the lead if he delivers two strong results in September.
Young Spanish athlete Rubén Cantoral occupies fourth position with 1,474 points and has been one of the season’s major revelations. Despite competing in the junior division, his third place in the Technical Race and fourth position in the Sprint in Poland confirmed his ability to challenge the leading Overall Open athletes.
Aarón Sánchez completes the Top 5 with 1,352 points. His double victory in Zurich demonstrated his ability to dominate an entire event, keeping him firmly in contention ahead of the final two stops.
Freens holds a significant advantage, but he must still defend it across four potentially decisive races. Sergio Cantoral and Mercuriali are his closest challengers, while Rubén Cantoral and Aarón Sánchez will need to reduce the gap in Isla Cristina to keep their title ambitions alive heading into Sesimbra.
Alba Alonso Frey Takes Control of the Women’s Standings
The women’s title race also remains open. Alba Alonso Frey leads the Overall Open ranking with 2,151 points after completing a perfect weekend in Poland, where she won both the Technical Race and the Sprint.
The Spanish athlete has demonstrated speed, technical ability and adaptability across different competition environments. Her performance in Rybnik makes her the athlete to beat, although the current margin still leaves room for the standings to change during the Atlantic block.
Nuria Chiquero occupies second place with 1,656 points, 495 behind the leader. Her two runner-up finishes in Poland confirmed her outstanding consistency. As with Rubén Cantoral in the men’s competition, her position near the top of the overall standings highlights the growing influence of the circuit’s new generation.
Cecilia Pampinella, who led the ranking following the Taranto event, is third with 1,302 points. The Italian remains in contention following her strong start to the season and will need to rediscover her best form in Isla Cristina to close the gap on the leading pair.
Sveva Sabato sits fourth with 1,222 points, while Espe Barreras is fifth with 1,187. Only 35 points separate them, making the battle for a place on the final podium particularly close. Bianca Toncelli also remains part of the chasing group and could take advantage of any changes at the front.
Alba Alonso Frey and Nuria Chiquero enter the final stage as the main title contenders based on their points advantage and recent performances. Pampinella retains an opportunity to rejoin the battle, while Sabato, Barreras and the rest of the chasing group will need to gain positions from the opening race in Isla Cristina.
Consistency Will Be Key to Winning the League
The Overall Open ranking combines the points earned across the circuit’s three official disciplines: Technical Race accounts for 40%, while Long Distance and Sprint each contribute 30%. All age divisions compete together within the overall classification.
This system rewards the most complete athletes and underlines the importance of maintaining a consistent level throughout the season. During the final block, every start, every buoy turn and every position gained could prove decisive.
Isla Cristina will mark the beginning of the title showdown. Sesimbra will deliver the final verdict. Across these two events, the European SUP League will crown its 2026 champions and complete a season that reflects the circuit’s continued growth, international diversity and increasing competitive depth.
